Here is a brief overview of the origin of the ACD that we have come to know and love. the breed was developed in the 19th century because Australian ranchers needed a strong, independent, intelligent dog able to work and thrive in Australia's harsh climate. After many breedings and cross breedings ranchers developed the ACD which is a variety of breeds that were brought over from England, the blue merle Smooth Collie, The Australian Kelpie, the dalmatian and the magic ingredient of Australia's native Dingo. By 1903 the breed was established and has gone by many names including Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler, Australian Heeler and finally The Australian Cattle Dog.
